Sweden Investigates Surge in ADHD, Autism Diagnoses in Youth

The Swedish government has launched a comprehensive national inquiry to address the increasing rates of ADHD and autism diagnoses among children and young people. This initiative aims to explore the underlying causes of this surge in neurodevelopmental conditions and to propose strategies to enhance support systems for affected individuals and their families.

The inquiry will focus on identifying the factors contributing to the growing number of diagnoses and will suggest measures to bolster support in various areas, including education, healthcare, and recreational activities, as well as during the transition to employment. The Swedish Minister for Social Affairs, Jakob Forssmed, emphasized that the objective is to enable children and young people with neuropsychiatric conditions to achieve their full potential and integrate seamlessly into society.

With the increasing diagnoses putting significant pressure on child and adolescent psychiatric services, the government recognizes the importance of understanding this trend to improve long-term support systems. The inquiry is set to examine these pressures and recommend solutions to alleviate them, ensuring that individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions receive the necessary assistance.

Leading the inquiry is Mathias Wahlsten, Director General of the Swedish Unemployment Insurance Inspectorate. His leadership will guide the delegation in conducting a thorough investigation and developing actionable recommendations. The findings and proposals from this inquiry are expected to be presented by December 1, 2027.
