At Least Nine Dead in Kyiv after Russian Missile, Drone Strike

In a significant escalation, Russia initiated a substantial missile and drone assault on Kyiv early Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals and injuries to 46 others, including five children, as confirmed by Ukrainian officials. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities cautioning that the casualty numbers might increase.

The nighttime offensive inflicted severe damage on residential structures throughout the Ukrainian capital. Emergency responders reported that at least 15 apartment buildings sustained damage or were demolished. Among the hardest hit was a nine-story residential block in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district, where rescue crews are actively working to extricate individuals trapped beneath the debris.

In addition to the devastation in Kyiv, another fatality was recorded in the Bucha district, located northwest of the capital. Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged conducting what it termed a “massive” strike, utilizing long-range missiles and drones aimed at military, energy, and airfield infrastructure within Kyiv and other regions in Ukraine.

This attack follows closely on the heels of another major Russian offensive just days prior, which claimed the lives of at least 27 people in Kyiv, marking it as one of the deadliest strikes on the city this year. The continuous assaults have heightened tensions and added to the destruction across the region.

On another front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported ongoing combat around the strategically vital town of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region. He refuted Russian assertions that the town had been captured, underscoring the ongoing conflict in the area.
