Nordic Leaders Call on China to Mediate Russia-Ukraine Conflict Resolution

During a recent visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to several Nordic countries, leaders from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway called on China to leverage its influence to help end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a meeting held in Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre urged China to promote a ceasefire and facilitate meaningful peace talks. He also voiced concerns about China’s sustained economic engagements with Russia, particularly through energy transactions.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide highlighted that the Nordic nations collectively encouraged China to persuade Russia to commence negotiations without any preconditions. This unified stance aims to bring about a resolution to the hostilities, which have had significant global repercussions.

In addition to discussions on the Ukraine conflict, the meetings addressed a variety of other topics, including trade, climate initiatives, renewable energy, and issues related to the Arctic region. Norwegian officials underscored the importance of cooperating with China on mutual interests while simultaneously expressing concerns about national security, cybersecurity, and human rights issues, particularly in regions like Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong. The growing Chinese presence in the Arctic was also a topic of concern during the talks.

Wang Yi’s five-day tour across the Nordic region highlights China’s increasing diplomatic engagement with these countries amid rising geopolitical tensions. The visit underscored the complex and multifaceted nature of international relations, where cooperation and contention coexist on various fronts.
