Amid heightened tensions with Poland, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not be attending the Ukraine Recovery Conference scheduled to take place in Gdańsk, Poland. The conference, designed to rally international support and investment for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, will see Ukraine represented by a delegation led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. The decision for Zelenskyy to skip the event comes in the wake of a historical dispute that has recently strained relations between Kyiv and Warsaw.
The discord stems from a controversial move by President Zelenskyy, who sanctioned the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). While many in Ukraine view the UPA as a symbol of their struggle for independence, in Poland, the group is associated with the massacre of thousands of Poles during World War II. This decision has drawn criticism from Polish officials, including President Karol Nawrocki, who accused Ukraine of disregarding historical grievances.
Defending his stance, Zelenskyy argued that military units should have the autonomy to adopt names resonant with Ukrainian history. He cautioned that any political discord could potentially undermine the cooperative efforts between Ukraine and Poland, especially given the current security challenges posed by Russia’s ongoing aggression. Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for both nations to de-escalate tensions, emphasizing that disputes should not harm the strategic partnership that has been pivotal since Russia’s invasion.
European officials have also weighed in on the matter, warning that deteriorating relations between Ukraine and Poland could inadvertently play into Russia’s hands. They underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between the neighboring countries, urging both sides to work through their differences for the greater good.
