Norway implemented a partial restriction of airspace over Oslo and the Romerike region on Tuesday to facilitate high-level diplomatic talks as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived to discuss efforts to end Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The discussions aim to advance diplomatic initiatives and involve meetings with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. US special envoy Steve Witkoff is also expected to attend, with Jared Kushner participating remotely. The talks are scheduled to continue through Wednesday.
Norwegian Prime Minister Støre emphasized the importance of these discussions for steering diplomatic efforts towards a more constructive path. Both Norway and Finland have been supporting Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, providing financial aid, engaging in military cooperation, and participating in broader European security initiatives.
The talks come amidst ongoing Russian military actions targeting Ukrainian cities and vital infrastructure. Ukraine has called for increased Western air defense support and ongoing international pressure on Moscow as the conflict endures. President Zelensky’s engagement also included discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which have heightened Kyiv’s hopes for sustained support from Washington, including warnings against potential Russian attacks.
Norwegian political leaders have underscored the strategic importance of the meeting, aiming to ensure Ukraine’s interests are at the forefront of diplomatic discussions aimed at resolving the conflict. These talks represent a critical moment for Ukraine and its allies to potentially influence the trajectory of diplomatic efforts with Russia.
