In the Netherlands, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his political organization, the D66 party, have come under scrutiny for their extensive use of artificial intelligence to create social media content. An analysis of 1,812 posts on platforms such as X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn since 2021 revealed that at least 232 of these posts were generated using AI chatbots. This includes 68 posts from Jetten’s personal accounts and 164 from the D66 party’s accounts.
The reliance on AI-generated content saw a notable increase following the collapse of the Schoof I Cabinet in June 2025. Since then, approximately 30% of the social media content from Jetten and D66 has been identified as AI-generated. Beyond social media, AI tools were also utilized in the creation of Jetten’s book, “Hoe het wél kan,” and in crafting lines for three D66 campaign videos. This development has sparked concerns, especially since some AI-generated posts addressed sensitive topics like the war in Ukraine, the MH17 disaster commemoration, and the Dutch government’s apology to the Moluccan community.
While D66 has acknowledged using AI, they maintain that all content undergoes review and refinement by their staff. They further assert that posts on Jetten’s personal accounts are derived from his own input and receive his approval or editing. Despite these assurances, experts are raising questions about the potential impact on public trust and authenticity. Claes de Vreese, a professor at the University of Amsterdam, highlighted the risk that AI-generated language could blur the line between a politician’s authentic views and computer-generated messaging.
This controversy not only challenges the credibility of Jetten but also ignites a broader debate on transparency and the ethical use of AI in political communication. With official social media accounts expected to authentically represent the personal views and words of elected officials, the integration of AI into these communications raises significant questions about the future of political discourse and the authenticity of messages conveyed to the public.
