Netherlands to Ban Smartphones in Schools to Protect Children from Distractions

The Dutch government has announced plans to implement a nationwide ban on smartphones in schools beginning January 1, 2027. This measure aims to shield children from digital distractions and online risks during both lessons and break times. The policy, dubbed “At Home or in the Vault,” seeks to ensure students remain focused on their studies and are less exposed to potentially harmful online content.

While many schools in the Netherlands already have similar smartphone restrictions, the government intends for this new regulation to standardize practices across all educational institutions. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance online safety for children, which includes supporting proposals for a European minimum age for social media use. Technology companies are expected to take a more active role in making their platforms safer for younger audiences.

In addition to the smartphone ban, the Dutch government is conducting a review of popular digital services such as social media platforms, streaming services, and online games. The review aims to determine whether these services comply with stricter child-safety standards. The government emphasizes the importance of creating a safe environment for children both offline and online, noting concerns about addictive platform designs, unwanted contact, and exposure to harmful content.

These efforts reflect the Netherlands’ commitment to safeguarding children from the negative impacts of digital technology. By addressing these issues, the government hopes to promote a healthier and more focused educational environment while also protecting children from various online hazards.
