Elon Musk has revealed a prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2, which features advanced rocket-thruster technology developed by SpaceX. In a demonstration held in Texas, the electric sports car showcased its ability to perform aerial maneuvers using thrusters to drive up a curved ramp, execute rolls, and land safely. The event highlighted Musk’s vision of combining electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion, aimed at creating a potential flying car.
Musk noted that the vehicle’s aerial capabilities are facilitated by altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters. However, he acknowledged that such features might not be permissible under current vehicle regulations in all jurisdictions. To mitigate safety risks, the demonstration was conducted remotely.
Production of the Tesla Roadster 2 is anticipated to begin in 2028, with an expected price tag exceeding $200,000. Tesla plans to offer various versions of the vehicle, including a performance model and a more specialized variant equipped with the thrust system. A unique single-seat rocket version with a full flight system is also proposed, to be made available by invitation only.
Tesla has cautioned that the flying capabilities of the Roadster 2 are not intended for use on public roads. While the prototype’s demonstration underscores Musk’s ambition, practical use, safety considerations, and regulatory approvals remain significant challenges that need to be addressed before such technology can become mainstream.
