Meta has introduced a new AI-powered feature for Instagram called Muse Image, which allows users to generate AI-created images by referencing photos from public Instagram accounts. This feature has sparked privacy concerns because it operates by default, enabling users to utilize publicly shared photos without explicit consent. Privacy advocates warn that many individuals may not realize their photos are being used in this manner.
While Meta has stated that Muse Image incorporates safety measures, including automatic exclusion of private accounts and users under the age of 18, privacy experts argue that the opt-out option for adult users with public accounts is not readily accessible. They believe users should have been required to opt in to allow their content to be used for AI image generation, rather than having it activated by default.
Concerns have also been raised about the potential for images of children to be included in AI-generated content, as photos shared by adults could feature children. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the protections intended for underage accounts, given that children’s images might still be indirectly referenced.
Meta claims that Muse Image includes safeguards to prevent misuse and provides a mechanism for users to report any inappropriate AI-generated images. Currently, the feature is available through the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories in the United States, and WhatsApp in selected countries, with plans for broader availability in the future.
