The advancement of a new gas pipeline connecting Norway to the Netherlands is progressing following the successful completion of a feasibility study. With this milestone achieved, the North Sea pipeline operator, Nogat, will now focus on refining crucial aspects of the project, particularly its transport capacity. This new pipeline is anticipated to offer an additional pathway for Norwegian gas, enhancing the security of supply in case current pipeline connections face disruptions.
Set to commence operations in 2029, the pipeline is planned to have a capacity exceeding 4 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which represents about 15% of the Netherlands’ total gas demand. This development is significant as it comes at a time when domestic energy production is waning and Europe is striving to lessen its reliance on suppliers that are considered geopolitically unstable.
Nogat emphasizes the importance of this new infrastructure in maintaining energy security. The company’s director, Falco van Wissen, noted that Norwegian gas, which already accounts for approximately one-third of Europe’s gas imports, is a cleaner alternative compared to LNG imports. The potential for a relatively straightforward connection to the existing Norwegian offshore pipeline is also highlighted, underscoring the feasibility of the project.
The concerned parties are expected to finalize decisions regarding the remaining necessary investments for the project by the middle of next year. By establishing this pipeline, the Netherlands and broader Europe can secure a more stable and environmentally friendly energy supply, aligning with their broader energy goals.
