In a significant shift in European aviation, Heathrow Airport has been overtaken by Istanbul Airport as the continent’s busiest hub for the month of July. Heathrow saw 7.86 million passengers pass through its terminals, falling short of Istanbul’s 8.15 million. This change in rankings stems from a 1.5% decrease in passenger numbers at Heathrow compared to July of last year, while Istanbul Airport experienced a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The decline at Heathrow has been partly attributed to disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East, affecting travel and operations. This development has intensified discussions around the need for expansion at Heathrow, particularly the controversial £33 billion proposal for a third runway. Proponents argue that this expansion is crucial to boosting the airport’s capacity, which currently operates close to its limit with two runways, and could allow it to handle up to 150 million passengers annually, enhancing the UK’s global connectivity and economic prospects.
Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and the ability to operate around the clock. It currently has three runways, with plans for a fourth runway to be operational by the end of 2026. This capacity allows Istanbul to accommodate a growing number of international travelers, solidifying its status as a major global transit hub.
Meanwhile, other UK airports like London Stansted and Manchester have reported record-breaking numbers for July. London Stansted handled 3.1 million passengers, and Manchester welcomed 3.4 million, marking their busiest July ever. These figures highlight the growing demand for air travel within the UK, despite the challenges faced by its largest airport.
